This Adult School was formed in 1885 as an offshoot from the main school at Carlton Hill, by a large class of men who lived in the Burley Road area of Leeds. Morning meetings were held at Burley Road Board School until 1886, when the school moved to Wordsworth Street Temperance Hall. Women's classes began and the activities of the school expanded, including a Band of Hope/Temperance Society. The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church.
